Why would Miami ever consider this deal?

Yikes, not only is Miami giving up the best player and the 1st rounder, they are adding Thompson to the mix of Whiteside and Bam.

Miami would have lots of capspace in 2020.

Most top lottery teams have capspace
NY, Phoenix, Chicago and Atlanta are all going to be better.
So there's little competition for next years draft.
Memphis could be worse, but they're already in the rebuildingmode and they could win 30 games.
Charlotte could be a competitor for the 1st pick, if they lose K Walker. And maybe New Orleans can suck if they trade A Davis without getting Zion.

So this trade gives Miami a top 3 draft pick in next years draft and enough capspace to sign two max contracts and a decent roll player.

Gasupo, draft pick is going FROM Miami TO Cleveland.

Miami trades the 2019 pick and trade away the better players, so they can tank for the 2020 draft.

Fair trade just take pick out. This type of trades riley does to clear cap space for 2020.

The question is who is a UFA in 2020? Lowry, Draymond Green and Marc Gasol. Not exactly the FA class I want to have cap space for.

Miami will have enough money for a max deal in 2020 anyway. Whiteside, Dragic, and Anderson all come off the books in 2020.
