With Kyrie trending towards the Knicks, the Hornets seemingly intent on offering Kemba the SuperMax, and the Pelicans possibly preferring other packages, it’s probably a good idea to think about contingency plans for the Knicks landing win now pieces to go around KD.

Knicks send #3 pick and Lance Thomas
Raptors send Pascal Siakam and Fred Vanfleet

This is worth it for the Knicks because Pascal is young and cost controlled coming out of his rookie deal and into his 2nd contract. He’s also got everything you need out of the modern player and can help shield KD from having to guard the best wing of the other team. Plus the Knicks get Finals hero VanFleet on a deal worth only 8 mil a year. Makes sense for the Raptors if Kawai walks because it kicks off a strong rebuild with a Canadian centerpiece in Barrett.

I know this is going to be the controversial one because Siakam doesn’t seem like the kinda guy you would want for 3 but I think that kind of role player, essentially filling the Draymond-ish role, is invaluable. Also, our expectations for rookies is also ridiculous, for example if Marvin Bagley ends up with a career like Siakam, that’s a win if you ask me, and that’s a way better draft class.

Then
Knicks send Frank Ntilikina and Kevin Knox
Spurs send Demar DeRozan.

Spurs are said to be trying to move DeRozan ahead of FA especially when the franchise is ready to unleash their new look young backcourt in Murray and White. Here, they get 2 high upside prospects including a forward which they desperately need. Knicks get a true second star and guy who loves to playmake and would be highly likely to resign.

Maybe not the depth chart of dreams Knick fans envisioned but a really solid team with some interesting line ups.

DSJ/ Vanfleet
DeRozan
KD
Pascal
Deandre Jordan (resigned) / Mitchell Robinson

Go Small:
Vanfleet
DSJ
DeRozan
KD
Pascal

It’s a team with a ton of playmaking, tons of rim protection, and decent spacing. KD could go back and forth between walking supernova and ultimate off-ball threat. This team would immediately be in the top tier of the East. I think they match up well with the Bucks but probably not as well against the 6ers.

I like Pascal and Vanfleet so that's not a bad trade if, and big if, a top free agent signs with NY. If KD doesn't sign with NY, Kyrie won't sign. I don't think Kawhi is leaving Toronto yet, if he does it will be to Clippers. Maybe Knicks get Butler and someone like Cousins or Gasol. I doubt that happens, and NY still won't be title contender if it does.

Package for DeRozen is a joke. Those are not 2 high upside prospects, an average prospect and a bust.

Kyrie Irving is trending toward the Nets, not the Knicks. ;)
