The way Brunson improves fit well for Mavs and Wiz and simplifies the trade:

Sign Holmes and trade:

WIZ Brunson, Green, Powell, 2x1st
DAL Beal

Join THJ by MLE.

Y know : )

You really don't know salary cap mechanics, do ya?

Its easy to say all these signings without actually listing a number. don't have to consider the salary cap or the CBA restrictions that way.

So where is the $15 mil in cap space needed to sign Holmes AND the $20 mil in cap space needed to complete the Beal trade? Spotrac is saying that Dallas has only around $24 mil in cap space after not picking up WCS team option and renouncing all the cap holds including THJ. That renouncement means that Dallas cannot exceed the salary cap to resign THJ BTW.

The only way this works is Dallas resigns THJ for around $4 mil (unlikely), use the remaining cap space to complete the Beal trade, and then try to sign Holmes for the MLE (also unlikely) .

Good luck with that.

The Mavs do not have the talent or picks to form a big 3

Man you’re a one trick pony.

Once serious about CAP - it is finally details. But Josh and Holmes you can sign starting 11.5m.

Extend and Trade Brunson at 2m + Green 3m and Powell 11m having 13m CAP and 125% + 100k of the outgoing trade y take Beal at ~34.5m.

Afterwards y still under the Taxline and can use MLE starting 9.7m to sign THJ.

Does it ring?

Washington hangs up and won't listen to another "ring" from the Mavs.

@ringring. Again, not understanding CBA or salary cap mechanics.

the "125% + $100K" rule applies to the outgoing salary only NOT CAP SPACE. So teams can not add the $13 mil in cap space as part of the outgoing salary. It is "125% plus $100K" of the $16 mil that the Mavs are sending out in Green, Brunson and Powell. So the Mavs can take back $20.1 mil IF they were over the salary cap at the end of the trade.

But the funny thing is that this is the wrong rule as well. Since the outgoing salary falls in between $6,533,334 - $19.6 mil, it would fall under the "outgoing salary + $5 mil" rule. This trade under this rule does not work as well.

So the Mavs have either two choices, spend roughly $20 mil in cap space to complete the Beal trade OR add another roughly $11.5 mil in salary (Richardson? ) to the trade to make the numbers work.

Lastly, there is also a rule in the CBA that says that if a team renounces the cap hold on a player, then the team can not resign that player if the signing puts the team over the salary cap. Signing THJ after renouncing his right using the MLE is exactly what that rule is designed to prevent. Which makes perfect sense, because if teams could just waive and resign over the salary cap, then what is the purpose of the cap hold to begin with? Because of this, the only way this trade works is resigning THJ cheap (which erases his cap hold) so that Dallas has enough cap space to complete the Beal trade and then sign Holmes with the MLE.

Again, good luck with that.
