Raptors/Jazz

Raptors trade away Gary Trent Jr to Utah for Jordan Clarkson and a late 1st round pick (from PHI - worst of PHI, BKN & HOU)

Trent Jr is certainly going to decline his $18M 2023 player option in favor of an extension, and some team WILL overpay him ~$25M per year. Unfortunately, it won't be a Toronto team that still needs to extend Scotty Barnes, Siakam, AND Fred VanVleet.

Utah is currently ranked 4th in the West at 10-6. So, why not get a head start on free agency and add another player to this young core?

The only issue is that Clarkson might not be enough for Toronto, and his player option for next year could scare them off. That leaves Malik Beasley, on a (somehow) more expensive 2yr contract, but it would honestly be a stretch to call Beasley a starting-caliber player. Would love to see more ideas on how to make this trade work.

Why would Utah trade away a pick for a player similar to JC? Dont be deceived by what we are seeing with the Jazz. This team will be out of top 8 by midseason and they will suddenly make a firesale and have a run at Wemby.

Because Jordan Clarkson is 30 years old. I'm aware that the Jazz don't want to keep winning, but they've shown that they can. JC is obviously not part of the team's future, but Trent could be, and he's better than anything they could get with that pick (likely no. 20-30 range)

This is simply the waste of a draft pick.
