Cavs get Rudy Gobert

Jazz get Tristan Thompson, Richard Jefferson, and the Nets pick

The Cavs address their biggest weakness with this trade: defense. Gobert is the best defensive big man in the NBA at the moment and has upside considering his youth. Gobert also gives the Cavs a big advantage at the 5 over Golden State. Gobert gives the Cavs a legitimate chance at dethroning GSW.

The Jazz just lost their best offensive player in free agency and watched the rest of the western conference get better. They could build around Gobert and hope he develops into the kind of player who can lead a team to a chip (which is unlikely) or they could opt to rebuild. This trade gives the Jazz what will almost certainly be a top 5 pick in a very talented class with the Nets pick. Plus losing Gobert will make the Jazz one of the worst teams in the NBA so they could come away with two top 5 picks in 2018 to kickstart their re-build. Imagine if they get the top two picks and land Marvin Bagley III and Michael Porter Jr.

It would take more than that to get Gobert. The Cavs would have to give up Osman, Zizic, Thompson, The Brooklyn first, and one of their own firsts just to make it a conversation.
