Instead of Minnesota trading Aldrich and the OKC first to Indiana in a sign and trade for Miles, they should try to trade Aldrich to Atlanta.

Minnesota would get a protected future 2nd round pick

Atlanta gets Aldrich, Miami's 2019 2nd round pick, and Minnesota removes the lottery protection on the 2018 1st they owe Atlanta.

Minnesota gets cap space to sign Miles outright and keep that 2018 OKC 1st
Atlanta takes a chance on Minnesota missing the playoffs in loaded West while also getting a future 2nd round pick.

I don't think that's worth it for the Hawks since Minnesota will probably make the playoffs anyway, so the pick would convey, and that second round pick isn't enough to take on Aldrich.

Doesn't Minnesota get a $14 million trade exemption from the Ricky Rubio trade. Why can't they use that to do a sign and trade for CJ Miles and send Indiana a second round pick?

ILD. I asked that to. I guess it's because Minnesota was under the cap so they didn't get a trade exception.
